I can still remember the day – I showed up to a friend’s hangout (you know the friend who’s good at basically everything?), and of course, she’d chosen a selection of the best wine and spirits, her charcuterie platter was unreal, and she even made a special salsa for the perfectly salted homemade tortilla chips that filled the bowl in front of me. Other than looking and smelling good enough to steal, I knew there was something about this salsa that had the ladies in line behind me coming back for seconds—I had to try it—and boy when I did! It was like a tangy, spicy, sweet, savory explosion in my mouth, and at that moment I knew there’d be a new entry on the list of my favorite snacks—mango avocado salsa (yum!). I didn’t stop there, (nope!) I tinkered with the mango salsa recipe a bit until I’d perfected my very own version of mango avocado salsa, and today I’m going to share it with you!

What To Serve With Mango Avocado Salsa

When I first fell in love with mango salsa I paired it with homemade tortilla chips just as my friend did when she introduced me to this fabulous concoction. But as my recipe evolved I found new foods to pair it with, creating new mouth-watering combinations along the way. And while tortilla chips remain my favorite pairing for this healthy mango avocado recipe, here’s a shortlist of other foods that will make a tasty tandem:

Mango avocado salsa is served great with:

  • Fresh fish—You may be thinking, “mango salsa with fish?”. Yes! Serve with salmon or halibut with a side of jasmine rice and a garden salad and you have yourself a light and healthy meal that is sure not to disappoint!
  • Tacos— Of course, right? Imagine juicy carne asada or pollo asada just off of the grill, chopped white onions, fresh cilantro, and creamy mango avocado salsa! Wow, I really should eat before I write these blog articles!
  • Plantain chips—So good, so good, so good! That’s what my wife kept saying after we tried our chilled mango salsa with warm plantain chips. And it’s so easy—we made our plantain chips with olive oil and salt in a skillet (it took 10 min), let them cool, and started digging in!
  • Chicken—Ok, I confess, I’m a chicken guy. Can’t get enough of it. There are so many ways to prepare it, and I’m sure you’ll like this. Recently I made roasted lemon-pepper chicken, a cucumber salad, pita bread, and mango avocado salsa. Phew, I may need to take a lunch break after this. Thank me later.
  • Chorizo and Eggs—I’m such a sucker for a Mexican breakfast, especially really good chorizo and eggs. There’s a place near my house that makes it the best, so I normally won’t make my own. I just bring it home and douse it with my mango avocado salsa and voila, instant magic!

Health Benefits Of Mango Salsa

You know the old song that goes, “If loving you is wrong I don’t want to be right”? That’s the stance I planned on taking after getting my first taste of mango salsa. Turns out it’s actually a nutrient-rich snack with loads of amazing health benefits. Here are a few reasons not to feel guilty for indulging:

  • High in good fats—Avocado has been called a superfood, but it’s also a high-fat food (good fat of course!). In fact, more than three quarters of the calories in it are from fat (1). The majority of the fat in avocado is oleic acid — a monounsaturated fatty acid that is believed to reduce inflammation and shown to have beneficial effects on genes linked to cancer (it’s the major component in olive oil!) (2).
  • Lots of antioxidants—Mango is packed with polyphenols — plant compounds that function as antioxidants. It has over a dozen different types, including mangiferin, catechins, anthocyanins, quercetin, kaempferol, rhamnetin, benzoic acid and many others (3).
  • High in fiber—Both avocados and mangos are high in fiber. You probably have read that fiber is good for you, but why? Fiber is indigestible plant matter that can contribute to weight loss, reduce blood sugar spikes, and is strongly linked to a lower risk of many diseases (4), (5), (6). Amazing to think that something that tastes so good, could be so good for you!
  • Decreases blood pressure –  Chilli peppers, including jalapenos, are also a Superfood! In fact, every tablespoon of chili peppers contains 145 milligrams of potassium and very little sodium. This means that chili peppers can contribute to the prevention or reduction of hypertension by ensuring proper blood flow (7). Who knew?

How To Make Mango Avocado Salsa

Now the best part—let’s make some mango avocado salsa! I’m going to go out on a limb and say it’ll be love at first bite, but I’ll let you be the judge. First—peel, pit and dice your avocado, then do the same with your mango. Next, chop up a small red onion, jalapeno pepper, and a tablespoon of cilantro and toss it all in a serving bowl. At this point your ingredients are starting to smell delicious, your mouth is watering and you’re just one step away from snack time! Finally, add your lime juice and seasoning, mix the ingredients with a spoon and you’re done. You did it! Now I’m officially hungry.
