This happens every year: Family and friends convene in thanks and good tiding at my Aunt Marlene’s house; food flows through the door in the tight grip of each guest; turkey, baked ham, potatoes of all kind, and casseroles the likes of which you can’t believe disappear in multiple helpings. Then it’s dessert time. I explain I don’t have a sweet tooth. Then, to defy me, my mother brings out what might as well be holiday kryptonite: baked cinnamon apples

Warm, sweet, tart—all at the same time, and with a magical ability to expand stomachs for a few bites more! My mother’s healthy baked apples with oat crumble are like a low carb apple pie, minus the nutrient-deprived crust. They take baked cinnamon apples to a whole new level of taste and health. But here’s the thing: Nobody knows they’re healthy baked apples! So even the most hard-headed, diet-oblivious family members are all about them.

My mother literally won’t give me her secret recipe (true story), but the one I’ve put together is suuuuper close. It’s loaded with age-defying ingredients, is easy to make, and sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

How To Make Low-Carb Apple Pie

Want your pie to stand out at the holiday family dinner? You’ve got to think outside the crust.

This recipe is a low-carb apple pie alternative that looks nothing like the freezer aisle options, and it’s healthy enough to put even homemade pies to shame.

Instead, you’ll be cooking up baked cinnamon apples with a delicious oat-crumble topping that’s not just eye-catching and delicious, but waist-slimming and age-defying.

Here’s how baked cinnamon apples differ from traditional apple pie:

  1. Swapping that nutrient-bereft crust for healthy baked apples provides your body with ample vitamins, minerals, and micronutrients.
  2. Fiber-rich and filling, these baked cinnamon apples help combat seasonal over-eating.
  3. No preservatives, no added sugars, no unpronounceable ingredients… Store-bought crusts and crumbles, even store-bought low-carb apple pie, are full of fake ingredients! Just check the label. But every bite of these baked cinnamon apples is real and really tasty.
  4. Typical apple pies can cause inflammation and oxidative stress, due to unhealthy ingredients. However, these healthy baked apples are vitamins-rich, with lots of minerals and micronutrients that can help reduce the signs of aging and keep your body optimally tuned.
  5. They really make eyes pop, mouths water, and tummies rumble. Just don’t get caught drooling. 🤤

These healthy baked apples are also easy to make. Easy as pie, you might say. Eat them as dessert (or breakfast 😅) from autumn through spring for a season-appropriate treat.

Best Apples For Pie

Most apples are pretty tasty, but only a few are perfect for baking. I recommend using the following three to ensure your baked cinnamon apples turn out fresh, tart, and with a satisfying crunch.

  • Honeycrisp: my favorite apples for snacking and baking alike. They hold their texture and sweetness when cooked and pair well with so many foods!
  • Braeburns: intense sweetness with a relatively firm texture that maintains crunch when eaten raw or baked. Braeburns are one of the most popular apples in the store, which is often reflected in their price. [1]
  • Empire: these are the apples with a slight melon or pineapple taste that’s delightful in baked cinnamon apples. Pick the freshest empire apples in the bunch, because their taste and texture fade the longer they’ve been off the tree.

Benefits Of Baked Cinnamon Apples

Now for the benefits. And these healthy baked apples are FULL of benefits.

  • Support weight loss—Apples have been shown to help support weight loss by making you feel fuller before meals, so that you eat less. [2] Try using this recipe as a sweet appetizer!\
  • Great source of protein—Oats offer the most nutritionally valuable protein of all the cereals. Their storage proteins are primarily saline-soluble globulin, whereas other cereals are primarily alcohol-soluble prolamins, which are much less nutritious. [3]
  • Lots of antioxidants & antiinflammatories—Cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger are  in beneficial antioxidants and antiinflammatories, that help reduce stress on your body’s cells, prevent cancer, and balance your physiology. [4, 5, 6
  • Slow aging signs—Unlike any baked apple recipe out there, this one uses Super Youth collagen peptides. Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies, but we stop producing it around our mid-20s, which is why our skin starts to look aged, damages easily, and gets wrinkly. [7] Super Youth also helps thicken hair, particularly in women. [8
  • Strengthens Bones & Joints—Super Youth does more than make you look younger—it also helps you feel younger.! These premium collagen peptides strengthen bones, joints, and ligaments, thereby increasing mobility and joint functionality. [9] Collagen also reduces common joint pain, even that associated with osteoporosis. [10]

Ready for the dessert of the season!? I bet!  Let these baked cinnamon apples brighten your holidays and help keep you on-diet while giving your sweet tooth something to look forward to!
